NO TIP POLICY AT MASSAGE SCI

Choosing a massage therapist is an investment in your health. When you walk through my Holland office doors, the focus should remain entirely on your recovery, your mobility, and your peace of mind. To support that mission, I have established a No-Tips Policy.

Simply put, at my practice, the price you see is the price you pay. There are no hidden "add-on" fees for specialized techniques, no upselling for essential oils or heat therapy, and, most importantly, no expectation of a gratuity at the conclusion of your session. While this differs from a traditional "spa" model, it is a deliberate choice made to elevate the standard of care and simplify your experience.

professionalism and alignment with healthcare

Massage therapy occupies a unique space. For some, it is seen as a luxury or a "pampering" type of service, often categorized alongside hospitality services where tipping is the norm. However, massage therapy is (or can be) a professional, clinical, licensed discipline. It can be a vital tool for injury recovery or prevention; managing acute or chronic pain; or mitigating the physiological impacts of prolonged high-stress.

When you visit a dentist, a physical therapist, or a chiropractor, you are paying for professional expertise and clinical outcomes. You aren’t expected to perform the percentage math at the front desk to determine the value of the treatment you received. The price is already set and understood before your arrival. By removing the tipping element, I am aligning my practice with the broader healthcare community. This shift reinforces the fact that massage is not just an indulgence -- it is a component of a holistic health and wellness plan.

eliminating surprises and akwardness

The moments following a massage therapy session are some of the most important for your nervous system. You have just spent about an hour in a state of relaxation or focused therapeutic release. Your parasympathetic nervous system -- the part of you responsible for rest and digestion -- is finally in the driver’s seat. There's a systematic downshift, a calm that we want to foster as more like the "norm" and less like a one-off "treat."

Asking a client to switch gears into a high-functioning state to think about:

  • How much did I tip last time?

  • Should I tip more or less?

  • What's a normal tip?

  • What will my therapist think?

  • Will the tip put me over my budget?

In my view, this rapid fire set of thoughts are counterproductive to the work we just did. It creates a moment of social friction at the exact time you should be feeling most at ease. I believe the end of a session should be a seamless transition back into your day, characterized by clarity and calm rather than a math problem layered with uncertain social expectations. It also helps with budgeting and planning your self-care: you know exactly what the service will cost before you arrive.

One of the core benefits of this simple and straightforward pricing model is that everyone knows exactly what to expect. This transparency builds trust. Whether you are a first-time client or someone I have seen for years, the financial aspect of our relationship is stable. I want massage therapy to be a sustainable part of your life. For many, managing a chronic condition or recovering from an injury requires regular, consistent sessions. When the cost of a massage is obscured by fluctuating tips and hidden fees, it becomes harder for clients to budget for their long-term care. By removing as many barriers and variables as I can, I hope to make it easier for you to prioritize your health as a recurring commitment rather than an occasional treat.

In addition to tipping, a common frustration in the bodywork industry is the "menu" approach to healing. You might book a session for back pain, only to find out that the use of myofascial release, hot stones, or specific therapeutic balms incurs an extra $15 to $20 charge. I find this approach complicates the therapeutic relationship. When I am working with a client, my goal is to use every tool in my arsenal to achieve the best possible outcome for that specific session. If you would benefit from a particular technique or a specific topical application, I want to use it because it is the right clinical decision, not because you chose to pay for a premium upgrade that day.

By offering all-inclusive pricing, I ensure that our time together is dictated by your body’s needs, not by a tiered pricing structure. Whether we are doing deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, or gentle gliding movements, the cost remains the same. This allows us to be flexible and adaptive during the treatment.

how you can show support

Due to this No Tip Policy, occasionally a client will ask, "If I can’t tip, how can I show my appreciation?" If you have had a positive experience and feel moved to support my business, there are several ways to do so that are far more impactful than a gratuity:

Word of Mouth: The number one highest compliment you can pay a small business owner is a referral. If you know a friend, colleague, or family member who is struggling with pain or stress, telling them about my practice is the best way to help me sustain and grow.

Online Reviews: Especially because I'm a business of one, Google or social media reviews are an absolutely amazing way to help others in the Holland community find the relief at my office. learn more...

Consistency: The very best way to show that you value the work we do is to keep showing up for yourself. Seeing your progress and helping you reach your wellness goals is the most rewarding part of my career.

a focus on what matters

Ultimately, this policy is about respect --respect for the therapeutic potential of massage therapy, and respect for your time, budget, and mental space. My practice is built on the foundation of high-quality care and transparent communication. In the service industry, money can be a sticking point, and I aim to keep that aspect as straight-forward and smooth as possible.

I am here to help you move better, feel better, and live with less pain and stress. By keeping the business side of things simple, we keep the focus where it belongs: on your health.
